The Moulin de Pen Castel: A historic site dedicated to contemporary art

Pen Castel is one of the oldest tide mills in France. Each year, around twenty artists and craftsmen take over this place, attracting more than 25,000 visitors throughout the year. In addition to the exhibitions, this historic site is the scene of many significant events.

 

Boasting exceptional history and architecture, the Moulin de Pen Castel was built in the 12th century. At the time, it was equipped with a double mechanism comprising two wheels, two spinning wheels and two millstones. Operating at low tide, it transformed wheat and oats into flour. Although inactive for more than a century (since 1919), the mill has experienced various lives, going from a gourmet restaurant to a creperie, and even a nightclub. Since 2009, the town of Arzon has chosen to devote it to contemporary culture, making this wonder of the Rhuys Peninsula a protected site.
