Suscinio Castle

This majestic fortified castle, erected between the 13th and 15th centuries in Sarzeau, was once one of the favorite residences of the Dukes of Brittany. The visit to the Domaine de Suscinio offers a real journey back in time to the era of medieval Brittany, with an immersive scenography, fun activities and entertainment for the whole family!

 

Nestled between land and sea on the Rhuys Peninsula, Suscinio Castle in Sarzeau transports visitors through more than 800 years of history. This exceptional residence, owned by the Department of Morbihan for more than 50 years, was originally a priory surrounded by a vast agricultural and forestry estate.

 

Over the centuries, the Sarzeau castle has become a defensive symbol with its moat, drawbridge, curtain walls, parapet walk, loopholes and machicolations.

 

After passing through different hands, Suscinio Castle was finally purchased by the Department of Morbihan in 1965, which undertook its restoration to restore it to its former glory. From the interior courtyard, accessible by a drawbridge, two main buildings, six towers and two curtain walls are revealed, reflecting the image of a large 15th century stately home.

 

The visit to the Château de Suscinio takes place through two main buildings connected by curtain walls: the Ducal dwelling and the Merveilleux dwelling. On a self-guided tour, an immersive scenography immerses you in the history of the castle and the legends of Brittany. Free activities, led by mediators or independently, offer visitors the opportunity to participate in various workshops, handle the crossbow, relive theatrical adventures, or learn more about the history of the Estate and its restoration .

 

In the evening, during the summer, Suscinio Castle offers a Sound & Light show, transporting spectators on a magical journey through the centuries. Activities such as the “fashion victim” workshop and activities for children add a fun touch to the experience. Summer evenings are also marked by sound and light projections on the walls of Suscinio, followed by an unforgettable fireworks display.

 

Since 2012, archaeological excavations have been carried out on part of the castle courtyard, revealing artifacts such as ceramics, bones, glass, and coins, thus enriching the history of the Domaine de Suscinio.

 

The visit to the Domaine de Suscinio is not limited to the castle, but also extends to the Suscinio marsh, made up of old salt pans and freshwater ponds.
