The Cairn of Petit Mont

In Arzon, a few steps from the port of Crouesty, the Petit Mont cairn stands majestically, an impressive Neolithic monument dominating the Atlantic Ocean. In tandem with the Gavrinis cairn, it represents one of the prehistoric jewels of the Gulf of Morbihan.

 

The Cairn, a pile of dry stones covering a Neolithic dolmen, extends 60 meters long, 46 meters wide and peaks at 6 meters, representing a total volume of stones estimated at 10,000 m³! The site includes three cairns, the oldest dating back to around 4600 BC, the other two dating from 3900 and 2700 BC, with burial chambers accessible via covered passages.

 

The site is freely accessible during opening hours, with guided tours, workshops and demonstrations of archeology and prehistory. Take advantage of the visit coupled with the Gavrinis cairn for an in-depth dive into the Neolithic.

Beyond its historical interest, the Petit Mont cairn offers an exceptional panoramic view of the bay of Quiberon. Located on the GR34 coastal path, it is the starting point for many hikes.

 

Classified as a sensitive natural area, the Pointe de Petit Mont, property of the Department of Morbihan, offers a privileged walk over 25 hectares. Three marked circuits allow you to discover the cairn and the coastline:

- The tumulus tour offers a 900 meter route to observe the cairn from all angles.

- The loop through the moor offers a 1.5 km walk inside the site.

- The large circuit via the coastal path offers a 2.5 km walk along the cliffs.

 

Near the cairn, near Fogeo beach, a 9-hectare recreational leisure area offers play areas and picnic tables, ideal for relaxing with the family before or after visiting the Petit Mont cairn.

Evolving throughout history, from the Neolithic to the Second World War, the Petit Mont cairn has experienced different occupations, including a German bunker from the Second World War, testifying to its rich past.
